What happens to Guantanamo detainees?

The excellent US Supreme Court Lawyer blog is busy making its readers aware of a pressing dilemma with some international overtones; what happens to Guantanamo detainees when they are released?

In the Parhat case, lawyers are about to argue that a Chinese Uighur Muslim should be released, being now an undefended stateless person, into the continental United States from the limbo of his Cuban prison.

The government is expected to argue to the contrary, and China is highly unlikely to take back an Islamist Uighur on any acceptable terms. Watch this space....

A Jacksonian Republican Party Democrats in the United States frequently lay claim to the heritage of Thomas Jefferson and Andrew Jackson. They present the two as tribunes of the revolutionary people, and Jefferson-Jackson dinners are often occasions at which aspiring candidates can strut their demotic stuff, as it were.
